The UAE is to set up a court  to try cyber crime and IT related offences, according to the government news agency WAM. Dr Hadef Jowan Al Dhahiri, Minister of Justice, yesterday issued a ministerial resolution with the intention of setting up circuits at courts of first instance acr-oss the UAE to hear crim-inal cases related to IT crimes and employ speci-alist judges within the fed-eral cabinet to aid in the establishment of the speci-alised courts.“The ministry is planning to bring into life specialised courts to handle new types of disputes in the judicial sector,” said Al Dhahiri.

The minister said that the information and commun-ications sector is a parti-cular area of focus because of the progress of economic and financial sectors in the UAE and the ICT and knowledge revolution the emirates are experiencing.

Al Dhahiri said that it is therefore “necessary for the the judiciary and legis-lations to keep abreast of these developments by creating specialised judicial circuits to serve litigants and issue prompt verdicts on such cases”.

Al Dhahiri also disclosed that a group of national judges had obtained PhD’s in cyber crimes and legis-lations in order to be able try such cases.  Microsoft, a company that is part of the Business Soft-ware Alliance - a non-profit group set up to tackle intellectual property rights violations - is an ardent opponent of cyber crime.

“Every year, millions of consumers and businesses are hurt by counterfeit software that they acquire unwittingly,” Dale Waterman, Microsoft’s corporate attorney for anti-piracy for the Middle East and Africa region, said recently following a series of raids that took place to tackle coun-terfeit software sales.
