Space crunch puts GRP cyber crime cell on hold

The Government Railway Police (GRP) want to build a cyber crime cell of their own, but are unable to commence the functioning of the cell in the GRP headquarters at Wadi Bunder because of lack of space and amenities. A network and computerisation project to connect all railway police stations under the Railway Police Commissionerate has also not started because of similar reasons.
The Central Railway is yet to accede to their request for more space. "Not a single case of cyber crime has been reported within our jurisdiction as it does not extend beyond railway tracks, stations and railway offices, and cyber crimes do not take place in these areas," said a GRP official. "Since the state government and Maharashtra police department has directed us to set up the cyber crime cell we will go ahead with the plan and be prepared to face any cyber crime in future."
Another GRP official informed that even the machines bought for the computerisation project have been lying unused in the headquarters, as they do not have the required infrastructure. "We are dependent on the railway administration for every small thing and we are their last priority," he said.
According to the Central Railway, it has allotted the top floor to the GRP headquarters of the four-floored building at Wadi Bunder. "Sufficient space has been provided to the GRP headquarters and also to the GRP police stations in Mumbai," said Central Railway chief public relations officer Srinivas Mudgerikar. "Space has to be utilised after considering what space needs to be allotted for the passenger amenities. If at all they have made further demands, we will examine the same."
