Cyber security in India is still at infancy stage and although the matter is of utmost importance it never find a place in the national policy of India. Further, cyber security also did not get enough support of a stringent and secure law.
Information technology act 2000 (IT Act 2000) is the sole cyber law of India and it is weak in many crucial aspects. Similarly, India does not have dedicated cyber security laws, regulations or norms.
Although India is slow at reacting various cyber crimes and cyber security threats, the cyber criminals are not at ease. They are continuously targeting Indian computers and crucial systems. Even many crucial computer systems at defence forces, home ministry, external affairs ministry, etc have been systematically compromised. At times these institutions or departments were not even aware about such breaches.
For instance, the computer systems of the prime minister’s office was bugged and infected by cyber criminals for more than 3 months and it was not at all aware. Even sensitive computer installations have been targeted by cyber criminals in India from time to time. It is high time for the Indian government to consider cyber security on a priority basis. Further, open source and indigenously made software and hardware must also be used by it.
