Online Games - Can We Make Money Playing Them?

May 25, 2010 |11:24 | Online Gaming  By : Team X

When we refer to online games we are normally referring to video type games that we play on a computer via the internet. Some video games are played over the internet using mobile phones and video consoles, but generally speaking online games means computer games that need an internet connection to be played. Simple text-based multiplayer games were the first of these types of games as internet connections were slow and expensive when these games were first introduced in the 1980s. Gradually these games became popular in the 1990s, with today's online games featuring virtual communities, realistic graphics and multiplayer games where people can even play one to one or in knock out tournaments for cash prizes. We all know that the internet is the fastest growing market place in the history of the world but did you know that there is an online games sector that is growing 4 times faster than the internet overall! Yes! and it's the "Online Skill Games" market.

CHINA'S press authority has tightened controls over online games twice in two months, sending the clear signal that the negative impacts of online games on society have grown too big to be neglected. A circular jointly released by China's General Administration of Press and Publication and the National Copyright Administration over the weekend banned foreign investors from operating online games "in any form" in the country, Shanghai Daily reported on October 12.

The rule also tightened control over domestic online game businesses. It said no organizations or individuals could run online game businesses without permits from the GAPP, and online games without approval would not be allowed to operate.

Online game addiction rising, counsellors warn

October 9, 2009 |14:07 | Online Gaming  By : Team X

Addiction to online games is becoming more widespread among vulnerable young people, according to a treatment centre that has begun running abstinence courses in Britain. As games become more visually enticing and the recession leaves people at home in front of computer screens, therapists are encountering more cases of people obsessed with being online.

In extreme circumstances game players can, they warn, become detached from normal existence and forget to eat or sleep as they interact with screen characters such as wizards and monsters. Youngsters can also develop posture problems.

Broadway Lodge, a residential rehabilitation centre in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, that normally deals with alcoholics and drug addicts, has recently treated a 23-year-old for his obsession with online games. Brian Dudley, the centre's chief executive, said:

The Future of Online Gaming in Japan

September 10, 2009 |13:31 | Online Gaming  By : Team X

Even the rear end of a chocobo knows by this point that Japan is pretty far behind the US, Europe, and the rest of Asia in adopting online games -- this despite the fact that they've got one of the fastest, cheapest, and most reliable networks in the entire world. What the 'ey?

The Future of Online Gaming in Japan

Even Kaname Fujioka is a bit perplexed -- and he's the director on the Monster Hunter series, one of the few big success stories for online console games in Japan. "Online gaming in Japan is much more advanced than it used to be, but compared to elsewhere it isn't where it could be," he told Famitsu this week.

"Why hasn't Japan jumped online the way other countries have? I think it's because gamers overseas treat online play as something quick, like playing a sport, rather than sitting down and playing for an extended period of time. A lot of online games overseas aren't about staying on all day and playing; they're about quick little games."

Game-Changing Hero Is Poised to Rule

August 31, 2009 |15:05 | Online Gaming  By : Team X

IT'S A GAME THAT HAS PRACTICALLY BECOME THE national pastime in South Korea. Professional players earn six-figure salaries and enjoy the benefits of hefty sponsorships from big corporations and the Korean Air Force. Two television stations devote programming exclusively to the game, one broadcasting matches all day, every day.

There is a league of 12 teams, and a players' association. To accommodate the crowds -- sometimes upwards of 100,000 -- championship matches are frequently held in open-air stadiums. Not so different from other popular sports, except that what the stadium crowd is watching is on giant screens, and it's a videogame. Human competitors in front of personal computers direct the action, but the real interest is in the lightning-fast battles in fantastically imagined onscreen worlds .

Welcome to the world of "e-sports" and Starcraft, the online videogame that's been a monster hit for 11 years, a near-eternity in the videogame industry. More than 11 million copies of the game have been sold worldwide, with a good chunk of those in Korea, where Starcraft still ranks among the top three online games sought out by gamers in the 22,000 PC bangs, or cybercafes, that dot the country.

A push to legalize Internet gambling

May 14, 2009 |16:44 | Online Gaming  By : Team X

A push to legalize Internet gambling

Reporting from Washington -- The online gambling industry is waging a campaign in Congress to legalize Internet betting, arguing that it is here to stay and can be regulated and taxed. But opponents are raising moral objections.

Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), head of the House Financial Services Committee, is leading the fight for gamblers. A previous effort by Frank failed to get out of committee, but the combination of grass-roots and corporate support -- as well as the weakening of the Republican Party -- might improve the odds, advocates said.

"The poker players and other online gamblers have gotten organized," Frank said, adding that he supported the legislation as a matter of personal freedom. I. Nelson Rose, a professor at Whittier Law School in Costa Mesa and coauthor of the book "Internet Gaming Law," thinks Frank will have the power to push legislation through the House this time around. "It will pass, although there will be changes," Rose said. "Very few people in Congress really care at all about Internet gambling."

Online gambling a bad bet for America, U. of I. expert says

May 2, 2009 |12:25 | Online Gaming  By : Team X

xJohn W. Kindt says supporters of a renewed push to lift the ban, which started with Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy’s wire act against organized crime, are betting that online gambling will pay off in easy new tax dollars, but the stakes are too high.

“The revenue they would get is miniscule compared to the devastation it would bring to financial systems, stock markets, national security and people’s lives,” said Kindt, a professor of business and legal policy. Rep. Barney Frank, a Massachusetts Democrat who chairs the House Financial Services Committee, plans to introduce legislation next week aimed at overturning the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, which strengthened the existing ban.

Frank also sought repeal but failed in 2007, just a year after the measure was approved with 80 percent, bipartisan support in Congress and signed into law by then-President Bush. “It’s outrageous that he’s trying again,” said Kindt, who has studied gambling for more than two decades. “This law was the result of 10 years of congressional hearings, where expert after expert warned of the dangers of gambling on the Internet.”
