July 2, 2009 |12:32 | Stuff for Kids  By : Team X

Kideo Player- safe YouTube video watching for kidsMy son enjoys watching YouTube videos, but unfortunately you can’t leave kids alone with YouTube because you never know what they’re going to click on and end up watching. I was excited when I found out about the Kideo Player because it’s all the fun of YouTube with none of the junk!

The videos play automatically and if the current one isn’t entertaining, all the kids have to do is hit the space bar to go to the next video.

( I have found that every once in a while the player seems to get “hung” and you have to reload the page, but if your child knows how to use the mouse it’s easy to show them where the refresh button is.)

While the focus of this buzz is centered around Google Wave’s features, there’s an aspect of the new platform that hasn’t received the attention it deserves: Google Wave extensions, which allow any developer to add their own gadgets or robots to the open-source tool. Extensions offer the potential for Google Wave to end up being used in so many different ways. But what exactly is an extension? Why would someone build one? And how exactly does one go about it?

Thanks to developers Sam Gammon and Nick Hume, we now have the answers to most of these questions. We looked inside the process of building a Google Wave extension, from start to finish and assembled the following guide, which explains the concept of a Google Wave extension, why they’re important, how one can be built, and what you can expect in the coming future.

Internet safety program puts kids' security at fingertips with custom ID

April 15, 2009 |12:09 | Stuff for Kids  By : Team X

A Canadian-developed Internet software program is putting kids' online safety literally at their fingertips by using their one-of-a-kind prints as their personal ID prior to accessing the web. It's among several safety components featured in Dolphin Secure, which launched Tuesday, aimed at providing children with a secure Internet experience and parents with a little peace of mind.

Rather than run the risk of keying in a user password that could be stolen, altered or simply forgotten, kids enter their username and scan their fingerprint instead which matches up with a unique number inside Dolphin Secure's system. Each child then has access to a personal, customizable home page, similar to social networking sites like Facebook or MySpace, and can chat with other kids registered with the service.

Online Safety Goes Back-to-School

August 21, 2008 |16:23 | Stuff for Kids  By : Team X

It's August and that means students are headed back to classrooms across the country. While some kids may have found more time to surf idly online during the summer, the school year gives them an excuse to be online even more.

PC Pandora"Kids definitely spend more time online during the summer months," says James Leasure, Co-Founder of Pandora Corp., makers of PC Pandora parental control monitoring software. "But very often, parents will try to curtail that time. Now with school back in the picture, kids have the excuse they need to 'legally' be online and surfing the Internet."

Parents will have no choice but to allow their kids to be on the computer, as many teachers now post homework online, encourage online research and require properly typed homework. But unsupervised time can quickly turn to mischief.
