This career coach makes job hunting sound like fun

If you’re like me, you’re still trying to hold on to that sleepy Thanksgiving feeling. If you’re like Tory Johnson, however, you’re back in the saddle and trying to help millions of unemployed Americans get  back to work.

Johnson is an entrepreneur, career counselor/coach and TV personality.  Somehow, she makes the onerous task of job hunting sound like a novel and invigorating idea.

Here are some of her tips:

1. Don’t wait for anybody else to make things happen. Your success rests in your hands.

2. Know what kind of  job you’re looking for. The more specific you can be, the better chance you have of finding it.

3. Parts of the job hunt are really tough. For example, maybe you hate to make cold calls. Or, you don’t do a good job of tooting your own horn. Learn to live with the discomfort.

“It may not be pleasant and you may not want to do it, but the alternative is mailing your keys to the bank and saying, “Come take my home.’

“The same is true for the small business owner,” Johnson says. “You have to hunt your kill every day. And if you don’t, you may not eat.”

4. Older folks,  keep your resume current — not a stroll down Memory Lane. Also, demonstrate in every way possible that you are comfortable with technology. That’s a common rap against older employees — that we’re techno-phobes.

5. Remember you’re not looking for a perfect job — you’re looking for an opportunity. Good luck to everybody who is looking for work. If you have any more tips, add them right here.
